How hit factor works
Hit factor is USPSA's measure of how efficiently you score on a stage. It is the points per second you earn under the Comstock method: add up the points from your hits, subtract your penalties, and divide by your time. The higher the number, the better your stage score, and it is what lets one stage and one shooter be compared to another.
The scoring
Each hit is worth points by zone, and the C and D values depend on whether you are scoring Major or Minor:
- Alpha (A): 5 points in both Major and Minor.
- Charlie (C): 4 points Major, 3 points Minor.
- Delta (D): 2 points Major, 1 point Minor.
- Miss, no shoot, procedural: each subtracts 10 points.
Why the balance matters
Because hit factor is points divided by time, speed only helps if the points stay high. A miss or a no shoot costs 10 points, which is often more than the time you saved by rushing. The best hit factor comes from the right balance of speed and accuracy, which is why a clean, smooth run usually beats a fast, sloppy one.
